India Marks 70th Republic, Pledges Solidarity In Fight Against Terrorism

By - - [General ]

India marked its 70th Republic Day which celebrates the establishment of its constitution in 1950, pledging solidarity to Nigeria in the fight against terrorism. India is also gifting Nigeria, a convention center dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, as part of its grant assistance project.

High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Mr. Abhay Thakur, who spoke at the event attended by members of the diplomatic corps, pledged India’s support to Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, stressing that there is no justification for terrorism.

Highlighting both nations struggles with terrorism, Thakur, expressed optimism for a more structured dialogue on anti-terrorism between Nigeria and India, beyond the framework of multi-lateral forums such as the UN, of which both are members. “There is a clear involvement of Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), in some of the activities of terrorism witnessed in Nigeria.

At the same time, ISIS has been talked about as a factor involved in anti-India activities. There are many issues and many areas where we can have a closer dialogue and work together,” said Thakur. As part of its effort to boost development cooperation with Africa and Nigeria, India has offered to construct a convention center named after Mahatma Gandhi in Abuja, Nigeria.

The center dedicated to Gandhi, whose political philosophies were shaped post his experiences in Africa, contributing to India’s Independence, Thakur revealed, will be a symbol of India – Africa cooperation. “We hope that we can quickly workout the modalities and the land for its construction with the Nigerian government, begin its construction, and if we can award the works early, complete it in the next two years.

It will be India’s gift to Nigeria.” Further addressing the ongoing celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Nigeria, the High Commissioner, called for increased economic cooperation between both nations via “enhanced connectivity, larger projects and greater flow of tourism.

“I am happy that some of the other foundational agreements particularly the double taxation agreement, and the MoU on Custom matters are being taken forward. When it comes to double taxation, and customs, investments protection are very important and will further boost our relations,” urged Thakur. India is ranked the sixth largest economy of the world. With a forecast of 7.5% growth in 2019, it is considered the fastest growing economy, jumping 65 places in the past four years, from 140 to 77, in World Bank’s global ranking of Ease of Doing Business report.
