Why I was sacked from TETFund – Baffa

By - - [General ]

The former Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Dr Abdullahi Bichi Baffa, has accused Minister of Education Malam Adamu Adamu of ochestrating his sack.

Baffa, who was replaced by Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro, said this in an interview with BBC Hausa Service monitored in Abuja.

“On Friday in the night, I was called and informed that the minister in charge of the education ministry, Malam Adamu Adamu, went and reported me to the president and called for my sack; and this is not the first time. For month they have been reporting me to the president, but the president stood firm.

“On Saturday in the night I was called again, confirming to me that they have given the directive to sack me. I asked, what offence did the accuse me of committing? They said the minister reported me that I am not accessible, that I have not been carrying out his directives, and that I am talking to journalists without his clearance. To say that I am not accessible is not true because the minister knows that reaching me is very easy. My colleagues at TETFund are even accusing me that I have been spending more time at the ministry than at the office. All the time I am together with the minister at the ministry because I have been playing dual roles as TETFund boss and I am doing his work at the ministry.

“The allegations against me are many. If they give you an order based on the law, you must carry out the instruction. But if you are ordered to do anything that contradicts the law or goes against the interest of the country, I will not do it. I don’t regret this because I cannot betray Nigeria, I will not betray the president,” Baffa said.

He added that “Eight months ago, Malam Adamu Adamu sent his biggest contractor who stated that the minister is angry with me over three things. He mentioned the first one, mentioned the second one and the third one was that I disbursed over N200bn to institutions, even if it is only 10 percent that I have been collecting, it is enough for me to garner up to N20bn. Where is the money? Since I started this work, I have never collected from any institution because I gave them money. If I ever asked any institution for any kickback, let them apply the capital punishment on me.”

When contacted, a deputy director with the ministry of education, Mr Bem Goong said neither the minister nor the ministry would talk about any issue with Bichi.

“We will not join issues with Baffa under any circumstance, whatsoever,” he said.
