Thousands Expected To Celebrate Christmas In Bethlehem

By - - [General ]

Thousands of Christian pilgrims, tourists and locals were expected to throng Bethlehem on Monday to usher in Christmas in the city considered to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ. A spokesman for the Israeli Tourism Ministry said around 150,000 Christian pilgrims and tourists were expected in the West Bank city of Bethlehem during the Christmas period.

Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the head of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Catholic church in the Holy Land, will lead the traditional Christmas procession from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. The procession of the Latin acting patriarch starts at the Latin Church at Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City. Accompanied by Israeli police, a convoy of some 30 cars will stop at the monastery of Mar Elias before crossing into Bethlehem to meet Palestinian officials.

The convoy will travel along Manger road and onto the festive Manger square. The clergy and guests will be met by locals playing bagpipes and drums, before Franciscan priests accompany them to St Catherine church for worship. In the afternoon and evening, local and foreign choirs will sing in the square until Midnight Mass when the patriarch gives his sermon in the presence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other officials and Catholic diplomats. The northern Arab-Israeli town of Nazareth will also host its annual Christmas procession.
