Yobe varsity appeals for allocation review

By - - [ ]

The Vice Chancellor of Yobe State University, Professor Yakubu Mukhtar, has called on the state government to review upward the institution’s allocation for smooth running.

The VC, who stated this during a budget defence at the House of Assembly in Damaturu, said that additional funding was necessary due to continued expansion of the institution.

He said that the new faculties and departments established recently in the institution had overstretched the existing financial allocation.

“A Medical College, which consists of Micro Biology, Human Anatomy and Medical Laboratory departments would also be introduced in the University,” he said.

He said, 7,000 candidates applied to the university for admission for the current academic session but only 2000 could be admitted.

“This is related to lack of capacity to accommodate majority of the students who are qualified for admission,” he said.

He thanked governor Gaidam for his commitment to ensure that the institution had attained its current position as one of the best in the country.

Also, defending his institutions allocation, the Provost, Collage of Education Gashua, Dr Muhammad Gishiwa said the institution has not held convocation in the last 18 years due to lack of funds.

“The last time that the institution had convocation was in 2000 and this has prevented the school graduands from accessing their certificates,” he added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Muhammed Lamin, said that the state government had done so much to improve the institutions of learning across the state.

He said similarly, the educational system was improved by lots of reforms carried out within the 10 years of the administration of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam.

According to the commissioner, many schools have been constructed, rehabilitated and expanded to stand the test of time, adding that they had purchased office equipment and classroom furniture.

He said the ministry had so far received N22 billion, which is 25 percent of their total 2018 approved budget.
