Customs impound 5 bullet-proof cars, others

By - - [General ]

Operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) have impounded five bullet-proof cars and other goods with a duty paid value (DPV) of over N591 million.

The operatives, who are from the Force Operation Unit (FOU) Zone C, Owerri, also nabbed six suspects connected with smuggling activities in the zone.

The vehicles include 2018 Range Rover with duty paid value of N10.27 million, 2018 model Hilux with DTV of N95.6 million and other brands of Toyota cars.

Commander of the Unit, Comptroller Kayode Olusemire, who conducted newsmen round the impounded vehicles and goods at the Benin area office of the unit on Wednesday, said that the command also seized more than 2, 300 bags of rice in addition to 22 new brand cars, imported into the country through illegal routes.

Olusemire expressed worries that people would take the efforts to buy exotic cars at millions of naira, and deny the government of the expected revenue by evading the required duties.

He also expressed anger that smuggling of rice persist despite the efforts of the Federal Government to make the country self sufficient in rice production.

While appealing to perpetrators of this act to refrain because their activities are hurting the economy, Olusemire said that the suspects would soon be arraigned in court.

These people aren't doing their job. For FYI the help of these smugglers has made life easy with importation. Those custom operatives are all thieves.
