One killed, six injured as vehicle being chased by police bursts into flame in Delta

One person identified as Olisah Josaiah, on Sunday lost his life and six other badly injured in a fatal accident involving the police and a vehicle carrying what was suspected to be petroleum products.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at Umutu community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State when a vehicle that was allegedly being chased by some police officers burst into flame.

DAILY POST learnt that the driver of the ill-fated vehicle, Audi 80 suspected to be conveying diesel had attempted to evade the police officers at the stop and search point around Obiaruku community of Eku Agbor road when the incident happened.

An eyewitness, who gave her name as Helen Ndude, told newsmen at the scene that: “The policemen that were driving in a patrol vehicle were on a hot chase of the vehicle when it collided with an oncoming Jetta car from Agbor. The Audi 80 car veered off the road into a nearby bush and burst into flame and the driver was roasted to death while those in the other car sustained injuries as they were rushed to a nearby hospital in Umutu community.

But the police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said the vehicle was conveying illegal petroleum products, adding that investigation was ongoing with a view to arresting those with the illegal products.

Meanwhile, Aniamaka had also confirmed that two persons were injured after some unknown gunmen attacked the Patani police station.

The attackers, who had attempted to overrun the police station on Saturday but were repelled by officers on duty

DSP Aniamaka disclosed that the unknown gunmen had targeted the police station to cart away arms but were resisted.

He added that those injured during the attack included a policeman and a female bystander who was close to the police station.

According to DSP Aniamaka: “The hoodlums tried to overrun the Patani police station and shot sporadically in an attempt to scare away the policemen on ground but the police men on duty replied, though, two were injured, but the hoodlums failed in their attempt to cart away arms and they fled with gunshot injuries.”
