Enugu State Calls On Government To Find Solution To Electricity Problem In Corps

By - - [General ]

Alhaji Ahmed Ikaka, Coordinator, National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Enugu State, on Wednesday called on the state government to find permanent solution to the lingering electricity problem in the corps’ orientation camp.

Ikaka made the call during the closing ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘C’ Stream Two, NYSC orientation course at the NYSC camp in Awgu.
He expressed concern over the inability of the state government to restore power supply to the camp.

He expressed sadness that the state Rural Electrification Board saddled with the task, had not made meaningful commitments to reconnecting the camp to the national grid.
He said that the state Governor. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, had during previous orientation courses, directed the board to restore electricity to the camp.
“So far the action of the Enugu State Rural Electrification Board towards restoring electricity to the camp has not been fulfilled.

“The same promise was made in the past and till now there has not been light in spite of the directive by the governor. This is not good enough,” he said.
Ikaka said that the NYSC management in the state was not unmindful of the good gestures of the state government aimed at upgrading dilapidated infrastructure in the camp.
“It is important that we appreciate the contributions of the state government which has always made huge differences.

“We are immensely grateful to the governor for the support we receive from him, especially during orientation courses of this nature that was held twice successively,” he said.
He appealed to the corps members to respect the culture and traditions of their host communities where they would be deployed.

“I urge you to identify areas of need in your host communities and endeavour to solve them through involvement in both individual and group community development projects.
“You should also mobilise members of your host communities to overcome their challenges and in doing so you will attract goodwill and honour,” Ikaka said.

Responding, Ugwuanyi commended the corps members for the successful orientation course.
The governor who was represented by his Special Assistant on Youth Affairs, Mr Ogechukwu Nnamene, appealed to them to make good use of their stay while rendering quality services to their host communities.
He promised to prevail on the electricity board to fast-track the restoration of light to the camp.

He said that the state government would support the corps members as they strove to discharge their responsibilities to residents of the state including their participation in the 2019 elections.

“Your predecessors had done the nation proud in performing similar assignments in the past and the entire nation expects you will also acquit yourselves creditably.
“I want to assure you that the state government will provide adequate protection to all that will be engaged in the election exercise.

“Remember, you are role models and the nation expects certain minimum standard of discipline and exemplary conduct from you” Ugwuanyi said.
