EU And MCN Programme Start Training Of 20 Journalists In Maiduguri

By - - [General ]

The European Union (EU) and the British Council-supported Managing Conflict in Nigeria (MCN) programme on Wednesday began the training of 20 journalists in Maiduguri.

The theme of the four-day training is “Capacity Building Workshop for Media Practitioners on Conflict/Sensitive Communications and Elections Reporting” and was designed to equip reporters with new skills to enhance peace restoration process in the North-East.

The Programme Manager, Zara Goni, said the exercise was knowledge driven, designed to build the capacity of journalists and encourage positive reportage on conflict management and election coverage.

Goni disclosed that the programme was part of its intervention to empower media practitioners, to enable them contribute to conflict management and conduct of peaceful election.

She urged the media practitioners to be fair, balance, objective and ensure strict compliance to professional ethics in the discharge of their duties.

The manager explained that the MCN programme was designed to support government and communities ravaged by the insurgents.

“We support governments and communities to reduce violence, enhance security and stability for human development.

“We initiate and implement various intervention programmes in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, to restore peace.’’

She said MCN was working in collaboration with development organisations to facilitate the implementation of viable projects in areas of conflict management and peace building, education/research as well as women empowerment and reintegration.
