Seventy volunteers in Katagum Local Government Area in Bauchi State donated blood to save the lives of expectant mothers through active campaign by Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) from March to October 2018.
The Representative of Mamaye Super Activists, Mr Ahmed Sani, made this known during a meeting by the Bauchi State Accountability Mechanism for MNCH (BaSAM) in Bauchi on Tuesday.
He said that the action was conducted after series of sensitisation campaign carried out at Azare Central Motor Park, office of motorcycle sellers and Kafin Kura Community in Katagum.
Sani said that the activists also paid hospital charges for 100 women attending Antenatal Care.
“After series of sensitisation, 70 people donated blood to save lives of mothers in Katagum from March to October, 2018.
“Activists partner with health officials to get contact of the mothers.
“We follow up and remind mothers who missed antenatal visit and remind them about next appointments through text messages.
“We also pay hospital charges for 50 women that delivered in the hospitals and 50 women that attended their Antenatal Care first visit, ‘’ Sani said.
He also said that activists distributed medical consumables, refrigerators, generators, 256 delivery kits to five health facilities in Katagum.
Speaking on challenges, Sani mentioned that inadequate blood bank facilities constituted a major constraint.
He said that others were inadequate power supply to preserve blood, inadequate blood bags, among others.
Sani appreciated the support and contributions of the community, religious leaders and philanthropists in Katagum.
