We will sacrifice our lives for our communities – Zamfara CJTF

By - - [ ]

Members of the newly recruited Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Zamfara said they would be ready to put their lives on the line to defend their communities despite the risk involved.

Some of the newly recruited members, who spoke to Caliphate Trust, said they were determined to defend their communities and rid the state of the menace of bandits.

They said they were fully aware of the risk involved but were ready to face the challenge.

“We are putting our lives on the line to protect our communities. We won’t relent in our bid to ward off hoodlums from invading our villages,” a newly recruited member said, Musa Kabir said.

He said their decision to firmly defend their people was borne out of the desire to rout armed bandits and cattle rustlers terrorizing them for many years without concrete action taken against them.

“Every day, we are being hunted by the armed bandits and we have become their main targets. Whenever, they strike in a community they will first identify the vigilantes to kill. Sometimes they identify our houses before they even raid the communities,” he added.

Another CJTF member from Zurmi local government area said rural communities in Zamfara state would have been over run by armed bandits but for their intervention.

“We lost dozens of our brothers to the bandits attacks and we are still counting the loss, now, how do you expect us to fold our arms watching our enemies eliminating us”

“They have inflicted a heavy casualty on us. We have no better weapons to fight them except that we use dane guns. They fight us using rifles. But our communities will appreciate what we will be doing by the day,” he added.

The state government had announced a plan to recruit 8500 civilian Joint Task Force as a fresh move to end the incessant killings and Kidnappings in the state.

Governor Abdulaziz Yari who made the announcement after a security council meeting said 500 members would be recruited from each of the emirate councils.

He also announced a reward of N1 million to any member who arrests an armed bandit and recover his gun.

He said the decision was aimed at stopping the activities of the bandits in remote areas where the military could not reach.

The governor said the menace of killings and kidnappings was increasing daily despite the deployment of more troops and other security operatives with equipment.

“Between 2014 and 2015 we had only 250 soldiers but now the number has hit over 1600 and we are yet to see any respite, so the recruitment of these able bodied men would definitely enhance the security situations in the state,” he said.

Earlier this week while addressing the newly recruited members the Emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku the warned them against attacking innocent persons, including herdsmen.

“JTF members have no right to attack innocent persons, therefore you must be law-abiding; you must cooperate with the security agencies.

“We noticed that some of you are attacking innocent Fulani herdsmen. Not all Fulani are criminals and even if you see criminals among them you should arrest them and hand them over to the conventional security agencies”

“You are recruited by the state government to assist security personnel to carryout operations not to take laws into your hands; it is unfair to be attacking innocent persons,” he added.
