Iranian Foreign Minister Cancels Meeting With Donald Trump

By - - [ ]

Iran sees no reason to “waste time’’ in fresh nuclear talks with U.S. President Donald Trump because he is “unreliable,’’ Tehran’s foreign minister said in a Friday interview.

The U.S. reinstated oil sanctions on Iran in November, six months after pulling out of a landmark 2015 agreement aimed at restricting Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

“We already have an agreement: We negotiated it for two and a half years with the U.S. and many other partners.

“Should we spend another two and a half years with this president, who perhaps will not be re-elected, and sign a document that his successor may reject,’’ Foreign Minister, Mohammad Zarif ,told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Zarif also said: “Why should we waste our time with an unreliable partner? And if our European allies weren’t shy, they would also admit that.”

According to the minister, the Iranian population is “rightly concerned” about the economic effects of the U.S. sanctions, but they agree with the way the Iranian government has responded to them.

Zarif said the 2015 nuclear deal “is a good agreement,” but warned that Iran may also renounce it if European-led efforts to keep it alive fail.

“Our options our open: One is to continue working with Europe to respect (the agreement), but there are other options,” he said.

If (the Iranian) people decide that it does not bring the expected economic benefits, any government – a pragmatic, a conservative one or however you want to label it – will follow the popular will,” Zarif concluded.
