I’ve been putting out fires since I became El-Rufai’s spokesman- Aruwan

By - - [ ]

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Nasir El-Rufai on media and publicity, Samuel Aruwan has said he has found himself to be putting out more fires in the course of doing his job rather than practicing with the principles of Public Relations.

Aruwan, who spoke at the November 2018 ‘Professional Talk’ of the Kaduna State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) over the weekend, said El-Rufai-led administration came in at a time certain persons in the state have become accustomed to blackmail, demonization and abuse of media power for divisive reasons.

He said this was not helped by the fact that past public policies encouraged and rewarded identity politics which had led to the perpetuation of ethnic and religious divisions where people have come to believe that they can use faith and tribe for bargain.

Aruwan said the constitution of the country however, recognizes and upholds individual rights, including the right to live and work anywhere and the right to practice the faith of one’s choice and to be secure hence, the government took certain measures to ensure that.

He said part of the issues the administration had to grapple with were deliberate misrepresentation of events and outright fabrication of stories to achieve certain aims.

“These are the huge issues one has been tackling within the last three and the half years as a spokesperson amidst demonization, blackmail, intimidation, deliberate distortion, misrepresentation and a-times, denigrated and abused as wicked spokesperson,” he said.

The media aide to the Kaduna governor however, said he believes that given the measures taken, they’ve been able to overcome the challenges.
