By - - [ ]

A Plateau State High Court yesterday remanded the 19 suspects in connection with the killing of the immediate past Chief of Administration, Army Headquarters, Major-General Idris Alkali and fixed 10 December for commencement of hearing.

The 19 suspects had been arraigned by the Plateau State Police Command before Justice Danjuma Longji of State High Court 5 on a two-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Counsel to the prosecution, Emmanuel Ochoba, had moved for an ex-parte application which was granted by the court, there after the charges were read out and the accused all pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution counsel had requested that the accused be remanded in prison custody and asked the court for an adjournment to enable them bring witnesses which were granted.

Defence counsel to the accused, Gyang Zi, told journalists that the accused had pleaded not guilty and that they would file bail application immediately.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong yesterday paid a condolence visit to Alkali’s wife, Hajiya Salamatu.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mark Longyen, said Lalong was accompanied by top government and traditional rulers after he also visited the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, to condole with the army.

Lalong had presented a condolence letter to the widow of the deceased, saying “I received with deep shock and great sadness, the news of the unfortunate death of your beloved husband, the late Major-General Idris Alkali. It is very unfortunate, painful and highly regrettable that his life was cut short by the enemies of peace, progress and societal co-existence in a village in Plateau State.”

He assured that the state government would, in collaboration with the security agencies, leave no stone unturned to ensure that all the perpetrators of “the dastardly act and horrendous crime are apprehended, prosecuted and made to pay the supreme price for their savage actions.”
