Yobe Assembly set to ban prostitution, gambling, sale of alcohol

By - - [ ]

The Yobe State House of Assembly is set to enact a law that will prohibit prostitution, gambling, production and sale of liquor as well as other social vices banned by the state sharia law.

A bill to amend some sections of the law, which passed the first and second readings after intensive deliberations on the floor of the house, was also committed to the house standing committee on Religious Affairs and Justice for further scrutiny.

While given insight on the bill, the Assembly Speaker, Adamu Dala Dogo said “the bill also seeks to amend section 6(a) of the law which only allows police personnel to raid suspected premises for the breach of the law between the hours of 6am-6pm”.

He explained that provisions of the law does not assist towards effective detection of the crime, since it is more favourable to the offenders, hence the need to remove the time limit for raid and arrests by officers of the law.

The chairman, house standing committee on Religious and Justice, Buba Kalallawa pointed out that the bill when amended will stop the perpetration of social vices in the state and will also empower law enforcement agencies to carryout surveillance 24/7.

“I call on members of the public to support the security operatives by given them vital information that will lead to the arrest of perpetrators in the state,” he urged.
